| Resumo: | In theory, the European Parliament is a place of multilinguism and linguistic equality. In fact, it is not so. Some languages are never part of the picture, and more and more small meetings are held almost exclusively in French and English. Although the institutions proclaim a policy of multilinguism, courses in only a few languages are offered. The number of working languages in the Parliament is such that the system has become clumsy, complex, and costly; and the situation will only get worse with more languages to be introduced. More than half of the operating costs of the Parliament already result from translation and interpretation activities. Were various structures to adopt an auxiliary language, this would not instantly solve these questions, but it would at least facilitate the work of the international bodies, and business relationships between producers. The Transnational Radical Party is ready to participate in a joint campaign with the Esperanto movement. It is proposed to approach the various authorities and demand a feasibility study on the teaching of Esperanto as a “first” second language in the elementary school system, and to persuade the parliamentary organs to adopt Esperanto as a reference language in the judicial and linguistic domains. | |
